I’m thinking of picking one of these up to mess about around town with.
it’s a Piaggio Typhoon 50. I know there is other bigger faster bikes that I could buy used for the money and I’m no stranger to motorcycles(I used to ride motocross).
this would just be to ride around town,go hotwheels hunting, go for a bite to eat,ect
what do you guys think?

If you're going to go the scooter route at least go with the Honda Ruckus. Or for a small urban bike there's always the GROM...

Motorcycles will make you more attractive to everyone. As you are in Canadia, I recommend something that can be used on both pavement and snow. Probably a suzuki DR or honda XR or something similar to those dual sport bikes. Just stick to a smaller displacement engine and you'll be fine. Or if you want it as a summer toy, again stick to the smaller displacement engines but get a proper road bike. Doesn't have to be a massive cruiser. Just a nice suzuki GS400 like the one below. Saddlebags will be your friend if you need to carry stuff and you'll just look like a badass. Plus people you are attracted to will also find you attractive now. So get a proper motorcycle instead of a scooter.
Remember - No one in North America ever said "I fell in love with them when I saw them riding a scooter"

No, since you loose both protection of a car and the compensating safety of superior (to a scooter) speed, acceleration, and maneuverability that a proper motorcycle gives.
Not only that, but it annoys car drivers because they cannot keep up in traffic, and are difficult to safely pass on 2 lane roads.
Since you can already handle one, don't annoying and unsafe, get a real 2 wheeler.

I understand what you are saying but why couldn't I keep up with 30MPH(50KM/H) Traffic? these things go 45MPH(70KM/H)

Well in my driving experience, I have yet to see a scooter keeping up in traffic. Then there are the Darwin Award candidates that take them on the interstate. Also poor acceleration compared to cars.

Scooters are fun. Where I live, 50cc scooters do not have to be registered or insured, so they make for great transportation to the store/for fast food.
Regarding the Piaggio, you are probably better off finding an older Yamaha Zuma. They tend to be cheap ($700-1000). The suspension is solid for paved roads/light trails. The engines are two strokes, so they have a bit more acceleration. They do need to be re-ringed every 10k miles or so, but pretending you went 30MPH the whole time, that's like 14 days straight of riding which you probably will not do. Parts are easily available and Yamaha is a solid brand reliability wise.

yeah it's almost the same deal here, you do need it registered and the insurance is only about $30 a year. but you don't need a bike license if you have a car license. but once you go over 50cc's then it's treated the same as a motorcycle with higher insurance and you need a bike license.
